Yes, the time of origin of the broad haplogroup J was very long ago, more than 25,000 years ago.. (but it means if we trace my father's father and your father's father, we would reach the same man 25,000 years ago at the beginning of the J haplogroup. How much further our lineage connects would then depend on more detailed analyze of your subclade. But surely yourself, Morello, myself and the other "J" members of this forum were from the same progenitor more recently than other people not with "J" y'dna haplogroup).
Within the J tree, my subclade "sk1337" formed 3,500 years ago. So more precision is found with more detailed searches.
I have had success using familytreedna's "Big Y" test and then sharing the results with "Y Full" organization. That is the current way to shed the most light on your paternal haplogroup.
