Triad Medal for Saving Life at Sea, Silver Sea Gallantry Medal. The medals obverse reads "VICTORIA D: G: BRITANNIARUM REGINA F: D:" the medals reverse reads, "FOR GALLANTRY AND HUMANITY FROM THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT" The medal is rim engraved and reads, "JACOB VAN ???ON 10 TH, FEBRUARY - 1884." (Note part of the engraved name is worn away)approximate size from the top of the suspension to the bottom of the plangent 1.64" inches or 41.65mm by 1.27" inches or 32.39mm wide

The Sea Gallantry Medal (Foreign Services) was instituted in 1841. Originally a special reverse was struck for each occasion. This was found to be unnecessarily expensive and so in 1849 medals with a standard reverse were introduced and medals with a special reverse were struck only occasionally thereafter. In 1854 the medal was reduced in diameter from a 58mm. presentation medal to a 32mm. medal with suspension suitable for wearing. The above is NOT an example of a rare small type medal with specially struck reverse.
